A bright mid-summer's day attracted a record number of bikers to Alnwick town centre last Saturday for the annual Help for Heroes charity ride. Their thunderous arrival and departure and extravagant disply of chrome have become an established part of the summer calendar, and an extra attraction at the Taste of the North week-end.
"Unfortunately the same still breeze which brought the bikers to town, was almost turning some of the market stalls into kites, which was not part of the plan!" says Dawn Watts, Market Manager. "Some ingenuity and outstanding teamwork meant that there were no major mishaps, and shoppers were able to enjoy a full market in the Market Square and on the street.
Like last year, the two day Taste of The North event attracted a lot of extra visitors to the town. There was a great selection of food and craft stalls, the sunny weather meant that visitors could browse the stalls, choose a tasty bit from the hot food stalls and sip on a cool glass of prosecco or pimms whilst listening to the live music programme.
We had the fanatastic Rachel Stephenson, Jonny D Sax, Nick & Eliza and the Kevi Steel Band performing.
The Taste of The North programme was complimented by a fundraising Ceilidh in aid of HospiceCare North Northumberland. "The event was generously supported by our band, Simply Northumbrian and local businesses", says Elizabeth Angier who organised the fundraiser. "Our party-goers, who included a couple from America just visiting Alnwick overnight, danced and jigged their way to a magnificent total of more than £400.
Taste of The North is a precursor to the Alnwick Food Festival which takes place on the 16th & 17th September. "We are working hard to make these feature events bring economic benefit to North Northumberland - to market traders, to local community groups and to other local businesses," says Philip Angier, Chair of Local Living. "Our event publicity includes a fold out map encouraging visitors to make the most of all that the town centre has to offer".
