Medieval Day at Alnwick Markets in association with Newcastle Castle

Join us on the 15th July in Alnwick Market Square for our one off "Medieval Day". Alnwick is a historic market town dating back 600AD. It is the perfect setting and venue for such an event. Take a step back in time and explore for yourself.

The Market Place will be bustling with traders selling their wares, from fresh local produce, fish, meat, sausages, cheese, jams, arts, woodwork, pet supplies, pet treats, soft furnishings, household items.

There will be plenty of entertainment, sweet treats and snacks for you to indulge in.

We are proud to be hosting Newcastle Castle in Alnwick. It's going to be great, here's a snapshot of what will take place!

  • The Militia: A few members of the Newcastle Militia will be present with the Sheriff of Northumberland, checking that all is well at the market, hunting for cut purses and ensuring all traders are using the correct weights and measures.
  • A small combat demonstration of fighting with swords and bucklers. The militia may also be forced to do some training if they can be suitably disciplined by the Sheriff!
  • A lovely spread of medieval snacks and drinks from our tavernkeeper.
  • A medieval physician to ply his grisly trade offering free diagnoses to the good citizens of Alnwick (treatment costs extra of course). He will have his leeches with him, as well as his surgeons tools and potions and poultices of all sorts.
  • One of the Newcastle Guild of Skinners will be on hand to demonstrate medieval leatherworking techniques. Outside gazebo if weather is good. Inside if not.
  • A medieval street musician and medieval storytelling from the proclamation cross.
